Frequently asked questions

Common questions about CoPa, answered without the marketing gloss.

General

What is CoPa and who is it for?

CoPa is a co-parenting app for divorced or separated parents. It gives you a neutral place to manage custody schedules, communicate about your children, track shared expenses, and store important documents. The goal is less conflict and more focus on your kids.

How is CoPa different from OurFamilyWizard?

Lower price, family-unit subscription (one fee for both parents instead of two), Bridge Notes, calendar sync to your existing apps, and SMS Relay for the parent who won't install one more app.

Does CoPa work if my co-parent refuses to install it?

Yes. You can use CoPa solo for your own calendar, journal, and document vault. For shared communication, SMS Relay routes their texts through CoPa to you and captures everything to a shared record. No installation required on their end. ($7/month add-on.)

What devices and platforms does CoPa support?

CoPa is launching on Android first. iOS is in active development and will follow. Your data syncs across devices in real time.

How do I get started?

Join our waitlist and we'll notify you as soon as CoPa is available. Once you're in, you create a family, set up your custody schedule, and invite your co-parent. The invited parent joins for free and has full access from day one.

Setup

How long does setup actually take?

About 10 minutes. Create your account, add your kids, pick a custody template, set transfer times. If your co-parent accepts the invite, they can be up and running in under 5 minutes since the family is already configured.

Do both parents have to be on Android (or iOS)?

Android is launching first. iOS is in development and will follow. If your co-parent is on iOS and won't wait, SMS Relay lets them participate via text until the iOS version ships.

Can I import an existing custody schedule?

Not yet via file import. You set up your schedule once using a template or custom pattern; the calendar then runs forward indefinitely. ICS export of your CoPa schedule is available immediately.

What if I change my custody schedule later (court order, new agreement)?

Edit the schedule in Settings. New custody days take effect from the date you set; past days on the calendar are unchanged. The change is logged on the audit trail.

What if my co-parent and I disagree about something on the calendar?

Use the schedule change request workflow inside the app. Propose, the other parent approves or denies, and the audit trail captures the whole exchange. If your dispute is bigger than a single change request, that's what your parenting coordinator or mediator is for.

Can I use SMS Relay even if my co-parent has the app?

Yes. Some parents prefer to text instead of opening the app. If you enable SMS Relay, your co-parent can message you through the CoPa number via SMS, and those messages still land on the shared record inside the app. It's a convenience option, not just a fallback.

Features

How does the custody calendar work?

CoPa supports common custody patterns like 2-2-5-5, 3-4-4-3, alternating weeks, and fully custom schedules. Both parents see the same calendar from their own perspective. You can request schedule changes, which the other parent approves or declines. Every change is logged with a full audit trail. You can also subscribe to your custody calendar from any calendar app using our ICS feed.

How do schedule change requests work?

Either parent can propose a schedule change for specific dates. The other parent receives a notification and can approve or decline. Every request and response is logged with timestamps in an append-only audit trail. Approved changes automatically update the custody calendar for both parents.

What is Calm Reading?

Calm Reading presents a neutral rewrite of messages you receive. It keeps all the important details (dates, names, amounts, specific requests) while removing inflammatory language. The original message is always one tap away and remains the legal record. Calm Reading only affects messages you receive; your own words are never altered.

Will my co-parent know if I have Calm Reading turned on?

No. Calm Reading is generated server-side for each recipient, but whether a parent views the calm version or the original is a private preference. Senders see no indication. The original message is what's stored on the record and shown in any export.

Is my message content sent to AI even if Calm Reading is turned off?

Yes. A calm version is generated server-side for every message when it is sent, regardless of each parent's viewing preference. This ensures the calm version is available instantly if either parent enables it later. Calm versions are cached for up to 14 days and are never part of the permanent record or any export.

Are my messages used to train the AI?

No. Message content is sent to Cloudflare Workers AI solely to generate a calm rewrite. Cloudflare Workers AI does not use customer inputs for model training. No message data is retained by the AI provider beyond the time needed to generate a response.

What's a Bridge Note?

A Bridge Note is a structured transition note sent by the parent handing off custody. It uses quick-tap fields for sleep, mood, and food, plus age-adaptive fields that change as your child grows: diaper, feeding, and naps for infants; toileting for preschoolers; homework and screen time for school-age kids. There are also fields for hygiene, activity, medication, bedtime, and optional health and free-text notes. Once submitted, it can't be changed. It gives the receiving parent context about how the kids are doing without needing a phone call or doorstep conversation.

Is messaging really immutable? Can I edit or delete a message?

Yes. Once sent, a message cannot be edited or deleted by anyone, including CoPa. Every message is a permanent, timestamped record that both parents and courts can trust.

Pricing & billing

How much does CoPa cost?

CoPa uses family-unit pricing: one subscription covers both parents. The parent who starts the family pays $14/month or $140/year, and the invited co-parent gets full access at no extra cost. There's no separate charge per user or per child.

Does my co-parent have to pay anything?

No. The inviting parent's subscription covers both. Your co-parent gets the invitation, creates an account, and uses the full app at no charge.

Can I pay annually?

Yes. $140/year, two months free compared to monthly. Renewal is automatic; you can switch to monthly at any time.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. 30 days, full access to the CoPa Plan, no credit card required upfront. We'll ask for payment details before the trial ends so there's no service interruption if you continue.

Are there hidden fees?

No. The CoPa Plan covers everything except SMS Relay, which is clearly marked as an optional add-on. No per-message charges, no storage upcharges, and no premium-only features.

What payment methods do you accept?

Stripe handles billing. All major credit and debit cards. Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported. We don't accept cryptocurrency, gift cards, or PayPal.

Do you offer discounts for legal aid clients or financial hardship?

Yes. We have a hardship policy: a 50% reduction or full waiver depending on circumstance. Email hardship@getcopa.app with a short note about your situation. We don't ask for documentation; we trust people to ask honestly.

What happens if I cancel?

You can export your full record at any time. After cancellation, your data stays available in a read-only state for 90 days. You can reactivate any time during that window without losing anything. After 90 days, the data is permanently deleted.

What happens to my SMS Relay number if I cancel?

The number is quarantined for 180 days before being recycled. We don't reuse a relayed number quickly because of the sensitive context that may have flowed through it.

Do you offer plans for parenting coordinators or therapists managing multiple cases?

The CoPa Plan is tied to a single co-parenting unit. For professionals managing multiple families, see the Legal Portal, which is free.
